West Cambridge Youth And Community Center

The West Cambridge Youth and Community Center/ Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is a multi-use facility that includes two adjacent buildings. The complex is an award-winning design by Cambridge Seven Associates that was LEED Silver certified by the U.S. Green Building Council when completed in 2009. The Center provides classrooms, project rooms, a computer room and a basketball court for after-school programs; the adjacent VFW building houses social and dining activities. Combined, both buildings encompass 30,000 square feet.

Stephen Turner Inc. provided recommissioning services from 2012 to 2013 in order to verify and document that the building systems are functioning optimally, with a focus on energy and water use reduction. As part of the recommissioning process, Stephen Turner Inc. conducted functional performance testing of all HVAC and major electrical systems of the facility, including the solar photovoltaic system. In addition, StephenTurner Inc. worked to improve indoor air quality and overall indoor environmental quality.

Numerous operational improvements were identified and implemented during recommissioning. As part of the recommissioning deliverables, Stephen Turner Inc. developed enhanced preventive maintenance procedures for both contractors and in-house personnel. These procedures include remote monitoring and hands-on maintenance tasks, as well as a three-year recalibration program for critical building automation system sensors.
